But it's a cool navigational aid for a website, and would make a killer desktop.

I've seen something similar produced by Eastgate Systems (http://www.eastgate.com/). They have a hypertext authoring environment called StorySpace that operates on a similar visual metaphor (http://www.eastgate.com/storyspace/maps.html).
