In European countries (and some others), companies must tell you what data they store about you, provide access to it to you upon request (for a reasonable fee), and handle privacy-sensitive data in ways that are mandated by law.footnote: here in Sweden, it's a constitutional right:
Citizens shall be protected /.../ against any infringement of their personal integrity resulting from the registration of information about them by means of electronic data processing.(iirc, this was added in the early seventies. It's mentioned just after freedom of expression, but before the articles covering capital and corporal punishment...)
