That's a definite worry, but there have been several cases at least that went the other direction: A writer published a book on the web, it got popular, and a dead-tree publisher picked it up. (And did some editing, so the print version was improved.) Not the best model for Stephen King, maybe, but for a new writer trying to break in it's hard to beat.
