Edd Dumbill's article, XML in News Syndication in the current issue of XML.com covers the various news syndication formats very well.
XMLNews by David Megginson is a readable subset of NewsML that should help anyone who is interested in that level of marking. As Edd points out, XMLNews hasn't been updated to be compatible with newer versions of NewsML.
